Referees

Why Become A Referee

There are three requirements for a sanctioned soccer game to happen: two teams, a field and a referee. Impartial referees are an integral part of ensuring a safe and fair game can take place.

Without referees our teams could not play home soccer matches 20 weekends out of every year!

U9 and older games require United States Soccer Federation (USSF) licensed referees and without a licensed referee or referee crew, games may be cancelled and/or forfeited, and/or teams fined.

To have enough licensed referees to support our youth programs we draw from the families and friends of our players. If every PSC team has 1 Affiliated Referee do 1 game a weekend for another PSC team, then we will never have a Center Referee shortage! (But we also still need some surplus in our referee pool in case of other conflicts, affecting any particular referee.)

All PSC Teams, Recreational and Competitive, Need To Fulfill A League Referee Requirement

All PSC teams, U9 and above, MUST have referee(s) affiliated with their team to fulfill the required number of game credits each season for the team to play. As a member organization of the Jack London Youth Soccer League (JLYSL), PSC teams and referees follow the guidelines established by JLYSL. All JLYSL member clubs contribute into a shared referee pool so that we can seamlessly share referee resources across any JLYSL match across our community.

For the latest information on the referee requirements for each team and the credits earned per officiated game:

Note: PSC U6 and U8 teams use parent coaches to officiate matches. No licensed referees required.

Where do PSC Referees come from?

The PSC / JLYSL referee role is paid and recruits can come from a broad cross-section of our community, including current and former club parents, coaches, players and local high school or college players.

Individuals who are 14 years of age or older (at season start) can become a USSF licensed Grassroots referee. The Grassroots license allows a referee to officiate any JLYSSL or NorCal Premier league youth match as a Center or Assistant Referee. The licensing class requires approximately ~5 hours of online coursework and one three-hour field session.

Referee Pay and PSC Bonuses

PSC provides per game bonuses (see below) on top of the league’s base referee pay.

 http://www.jlysl.org/referee-pay.html

PSC Affiliated Adult Referees (18 or older) receive a bonus of $10/game with a 5 game minimum in fall or 5 game minimum in spring – no maximum.

PSC Affiliated Youth Referees (14-18) receive a bonus of $10/game with a 5 game minimum, $15/game for games 6 -10 with a 10 game minimum, $20/game for games 11 and beyond. The minimum is measured for fall and then again in the spring.

PSC also reimburses the $75 first-time referee course and the new referee kit, up to $75, after a new referee receives 5 credits (1 game = 1 credit). Returning referees are reimbursed the $70 renewal fee after 10 games in a full soccer year (fall + spring).

Other Benefits

Becoming a referee is an excellent way to support youth soccer, learn more about the game, get exercise and get paid to do it. “It’s the best seat in the house.”

  • Learn more about the game.
  • Figure out what all of those calls are that you didn’t understand.
  • Get great exercise.
  • Trade game coverage with another team.
  • Be able to cover your own child’s game in a shortage situation!

*If no one else has signed up 2 hours prior to match start, a parent or sibling of the team with an active Referee License is allowed to officiate their Home game – with the opponent’s advance agreement. In our experience, they are usually understanding.
