Dear Piedmont Soccer Coach,
Thank you for the contribution you are making to our community and to the
sport of football (soccer) by agreeing to be a volunteer soccer coach with
the Piedmont Youth Soccer Club and Jack London Youth Socccer Sports League.
Without you, this club would not be possible and over 1,000 young people in
the City of Piedmont would not as easily get an opportunity to participate
in this wonderful sport much loved the whole world over.
As coaching coordinator for 2010, my goal is to provide you with support to
help you succeed as a coach. To this end, PYSC is providing all U-8 and U-10
coaches professional coaching support. In the case of U-8, this is being
provided in a pilot program through the Jack London league and its coaching
staff led by Glenn van Straatum. In the case of U-10, this is being provided
by 24-7 UK Soccer Academy. Please contact your age coordinators for more
details on these programs or look for periodic emails sent out to coaches on
this subject. In September, Jack Hyde, long-serving Women’s Coach at San
Francisco State, will also be providing a number of evening clinics
(locations to be determined) on September 16, 17, 18 – details will be sent
out to coaches shortly.
Please note that PYSC will also support any coach that wishes to obtain
his/her coaching licenses through CYSA-approved courses offered across the
region. Your license fee will be reimbursed by the club – simply send a
receipt and evidence of successful completion of a course to me and I will
arrange for reimbursement. A list of courses offered each month can be
accessed by clicking on the link below.
Periodically, this site will be updated with information for coaches and,
as the season goes by, the page will be expanded and improved. If any coach
has a good link or resource that he/she thinks should be shared with our
fellow coaches, please email me the item/link at
coachcoordinator@piedmontsoccer.org
and I will arrange for its inclusion. Please also send me any suggestions
as to how you think PYSC could improve your performance and experience as a
coach.
Sincerely,
Michael Lee, Coaching Coordinator

You are provided with game cards for each home game (when playing away, i.e. yours is the second team listed on the game schedule, the other team coach is responsible for the game card), you must fill out the game card as required (date, location, team names, player names, etc.). To save time, most coaches carry their roster listing with the player jersey numbers and player pass IDs either on sticky labels or with a glue-stick handy. They then stick the list onto the game card, crossing out the names of any players not present for that day’s game. Remember to always carry your player passes and your release forms (1601’s) to every game.

Many of our coaches use the Doodle survey site to set up a simple yes/no survey that can be updated by players/parents and viewed real time. It is easy to use and free-of-charge and you can see at a glance which of your players and parents are available for matches or how they vote on other issues you choose to convert into a poll. Click here to set up your own Doodle account and to view an example match availability poll.

For the 2008 season, PYSC are piloting a professional training support program for our U-8 coaches with the help of Glenn van Straatum, head of coaching for Jack London/Bay Oaks and his colleagues. He has produced a pilot coaches manual for use by U-8 coaches in conjunction with on-field practice assistance and best-practice modelling by Jack London professional coaches. A copy of the manual developed by Glenn van Straatum can be accessed as a download by clicking this link. This pilot program and manual will be amended/improved with input from this year’s U-8 coaches.
